One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding day timeline is whether you want a first look or to see each other for the first time at the ceremony. There is no right or wrong choice — only what feels best for you as a couple.

The choice is completely yours, but based on my experience as a wedding photographer for the past five years, this is what I most often see when it comes to first looks versus waiting until the aisle.

Seeing each other for the first time during the ceremony is a beautiful, traditional option.

Aspects to consider:

  • All eyes are on you during this moment and this can sometimes create what I call the “Christmas gift effect,” where the groom may feel pressure to react a certain way in front of everyone (similar to opening gifts while everyone is watching)

  • While still incredibly meaningful, that pressure can occasionally take away from the raw, natural emotion of the moment

  • Portraits typically take place after the ceremony, which can make the timeline feel a bit tighter and take away time with your guests

A first look is a private moment where you see each other before the ceremony.

Why couples often love this option:

  • It creates a calm, intimate moment to truly be present with one another before the day unfolds

  • Reactions are natural, emotional, and completely authentic without the pressure of being watched by a crowd

  • This moment often helps ease nerves and allows you to feel more grounded going into the ceremony

  • Completing many of your formal portraits beforehand which gives you extra, uninterrupted time to celebrate and spend quality moments with your guests

My Personal Perspective

Both options are beautiful and special in their own ways. This is a decision you have plenty of time to make - there’s absolutely no rush. I simply love offering my insight to help brides see things from a different point of view.

No matter which option you choose, I’ll help guide your timeline so your day flows naturally, feels stress-free, and allows space for meaningful moments.

Detail photos help tell the full story of your wedding day — from the carefully chosen pieces to the meaningful items that reflect you as a couple. These images are typically photographed at the beginning of the day while you’re getting ready.

To help make this part of the day smooth and stress-free, here’s a simple checklist of items you may want to set aside and have ready when I arrive. Not every item is required — this is simply a guide to help you prepare.

Helpful Tips:

-Place all detail items together in one spot ahead of time
- If possible, have rings cleaned prior to the wedding day
-Don’t worry if you don’t have everything on this list — I’ll work with what you bring

  • Including engagement ring and both bands)

  • • • Ring box or dish (if you have one)

  • (invite, RSVP card, envelope, details card)

  • Item description
    • (earrings, necklace, bracelet, etc.)

  • Item description
  • Item description
    • (family jewelry, keepsakes, etc.)

To keep this portion of the day stress-free, I’ll ask you to provide a list of specific family groupings you’d like photographed. This allows us to move quickly, keep things organized, and make sure no important combinations are missed.

WHY A SHOT LIST MATTERS

  • Keeps family photos organized and on schedule

  • Reduces confusion and stress on the wedding day

  • Allows more time for celebrating and enjoying your guests

  • Ensures all requested groupings are captured

WHAT TO EXPET DAY OF

I’ll guide and organize family photos on the wedding day, so you don’t have to worry about directing anyone yourself. This list simply helps everything flow smoothly and ensures these important moments are captured with ease.

HELPFUL TIP: USE REAL NAMES

When creating your family photo list, please use real first names rather than titles like “mom,” “dad,” or “grandma.”

On the wedding day, I’ll be calling people out by name to gather each group efficiently. Having real names allows me to confidently and quickly bring the right people together without confusion or delays.

Example:
Instead of: Bride with Mom & Dad
Use: Bride with Sarah and Mike

While your main wedding coverage will capture the heart of your day, there are a few add-ons that can make your gallery even more complete and give you extra peace of mind. These are options I highly recommend for couples who want to maximize their memories.

Having a second photographer is more than just “extra hands” — it transforms how your day is documented.

Why it’s worth considering:

  • More moments captured: While one photographer is with the bride, the second can be with the groom — capturing both sides of the story at the same time

  • Different angles, same moment: First kiss, reactions, and candid moments are captured simultaneously from multiple perspectives.

  • Smoother timeline coverage: Details, candids, and portraits can happen at the same time — less waiting, more magic.

  • Backup & peace of mind: Extra eyes ensure that nothing is missed and your memories are safe, even if something unexpected happens.

Your photos are meant to be more than just files on your phone — they’re meant to be seen, held, and lived with. Printing your images allows you to preserve your memories in a tangible way, whether that’s through framed prints, albums, or gifts for loved ones. Digital images can get lost over time, but printed photos become heirlooms you’ll revisit for years to come.

The best part? You can order professional-quality prints directly through your online gallery. At the top of your gallery, you’ll see a “Shop” tab — click there to explore prints, albums, and other products. Everything is designed to be simple and seamless, and your images are automatically optimized for the highest print quality.

If you ever need help choosing sizes or products, I’m always happy to help!

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: for you to feel fully present and able to soak in every moment. You don’t need to worry about timelines, poses, lighting, or whether everything is “perfect” — that’s my job.

I’ll guide you when you need it, step back when the moment calls for it, and handle the details so you can focus on what truly matters: celebrating, feeling, and being in your day. Trust that you’re in good hands.

You focus on being present — I’ll handle the rest.
